What Is Grieving?
Holding funeral services is a manner of taking action to overcome grief; it creates a visible memorial for your departed loved one. Almost all cultures have a way of creating tribute to the dearly departed. It offers those who are in grief a seed of solace, support and comfort.
Grief is an individual’s natural reaction to loss. It is the pain we go through when we lose something that or someone who we treasure as dearly as our own lives.
Several instances of grieving for the loss of someone or something are as follows:
- you have broken up with someone – loss of a job – you lost the single opportunity to pursue what you love doing the most – you discover that a person very close to you is dying from a deadly disease – you are discovered to have a fatal illness – you and your spouse are having a divorce – you lost the trust of your best friend – your pet died – a person you love dies
These scenarios can all lead to an experience of grieving. Of all the examples cited above, we experience the most powerful anguish if a loved one – be this a child, a parent, or a spouse – dies. Nothing of this world can take away the emptiness that is created by their death.
These cherished individuals may have been everything in our lives. So life is now never the same as it were when our loved ones were still with us. We grieve for what has been taken from us. Nevertheless, to be able to move forward once more, we must go through the grieving process and later pick up the pieces of our lives.
There is no right or wrong way to express grief. Yet we must opt for healthy ways to channel grief, which can encourage the healing that we need after experiencing loss.
It is common misconception that grief must be expressed by crying our hearts out every time we remember our loved ones who passed away. Still, tears do not constantly mean grief. A person may seem quiet, as if stoic; yet deep within, they also suffer from the loss.
Also, contrary to the myth, grieving does not only encompass only 1 year. Grieving’s duration varies from person to person. No one can rush and quickly “get over” the grieving process. Time mends all pains and wounds.
