Trophies As Rewards Of Success

Trophy was actually derived from a Greek word. “Tropaion” was taken from the verb “trope,” meaning “to rout.” Trophies were considered marks of victory in war battles back in ancient Greece. People used to create them on the battlefields of victorious battles, with the bases inscribed with the details of the fight and an inscription to the god they believed assisted them in winning the battle.

For the Romans during ancient times, trophies weren’t an accolade to the victors and the gods on the battlefield. Instead, they were frequently placed on columns and arches. The Romans preferred these extremely big icons made in Rome.

Not much is known about its history during the Middle Ages. However, it is believed that they were used as accolades for sporting events in the late 1600s. The usual shapes used then were silver chalices and two-handled sterling loving cups.

Probably the ultimate representation of triumph is a trophy. The usual setting is the bigger the trophy, the highest the accomplishment. From the largest of contests, such as major sports events, to the smallest of matches, like a local elementary school’s Spelling Bee contest, trophies are everywhere.

Although cups and chalices are still prevalent in this day and age, trophies now come in various types and sizes. More and more shapes are now being created, depending on the event, including stars, human and animal shapes, and abstract designs.

Instead of silver and gold, materials used today include steel, pewter, crystal, and plastic. They are much less costly and can be mass created.

Aside from sports, trophies are also given in acknowledgment of an individual or group accomplishment. Example is from the Hollywood major awards event The Academy Awards, where individual skills (acting, directing, producing, etc.) and group efforts (film, cast, etc.) are recognized with a stylized human award.

It’s not just a prize for a particular accomplishment in sports, acting, discovery or other skills. A trophy symbolizes triumph and position. It doesn’t only mean being able to beat your adversaries in a game or contest or being the leader in your area of expertise. Being honored with a trophy also means being part of the trophy’s heritage.
