SOPA is Why Social Media Needs to be Saved: Social Media Agency Discrimination
The internet is the source of power for any social media agency. Since the proposition of the SOPA and PIPA laws, the internet users of the world have been crying out their opposition towards the in-statement of the laws. Why social media agencies would be up in arms about this law is the same reason why people should be against a book burning rally; the freedom of speech.
SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect Intellectual Property Act) are designed to protect the ownership and intellectual rights of products that are obtainable on the internet. This includes photographs of your friendly neighborhood Spiderman or paintings by Monet or books by Stephen King. Why social media is a victim of this bill is the breach of our first amendment rights. The internet was meant to be a refuge for the free speech of all people and this act is trying to take that away.
Why social media sites, like Facebook or Twitter, are troubled by this is the affect it will have on these sites’ users. Anyone who posts videos or pictures that may be illegally pirated unknown to the user would be held accountable. This concerns the marketing industry as well. If a social media agency were to use photos and post them on a business’ site then the social media agency and business could face penalties.
A social media agency that uses social media sites may lose business and revenue. Without the total use of the internet a social media agency will be powerless. The usage of the internet is the reason why social media is vital to marketing. The internet should not fall victim to the government’s mistakes.
What is the big deal? Pirating videos and music is bad I don’t know why social media sites have anything to worry about in relation to this at all. A social media agency that has criminally used material on the internet should be punished sure. There is no reason why social media sites should face deletion or punishment for the misuse of an individual’s internet use. Perhaps a different approach should be contemplated before messing with something that doesn’t need to be fixed.
