Should I Grieve?

Grieving is an individual’s natural reaction to loss. It is the suffering we go through when we lose something that or someone who we treasure as dearly as our own lives.

Several examples of grieving for the loss of a person or something are as follows:

- a falling out with a person you have are in a relationship with – you were fired from your employment – you lost the single chance to go after what you love doing the most – a family member is dying from a serious illness – the medical tests came in and you found out that you are suffering from a serious illness – you and your spouse are having a divorce – you lost the trust of your best friend – your pet passed away – the person you love passes away

All these examples can make us grieve. Of all the examples cited earlier, we feel the most powerful grief if a loved one – be this a son or daughter, a parent, or a spouse – dies. Nothing can ever be a substitute for their place in our hearts and memories.

We may have shared a large part of our existence with the people who passed away. And life loses its former colors due to their demise. We grieve for what we have lost. Still, to be able to move forward once more, we have to undergo the grieving process and later pick up the fragments of our lives.

There are no set instructions on how we must grieve. When we grieve, we have to select the non-destructive ways of expressing the anguish that we experience.

Grieving is often equated with continual crying each time the memory of a loved one crosses our mind. Weeping is not the only sign that we are sorrowful over the death of a loved one. A person could be silent yet deep inside the waves of powerful emotions are roiling.

In addition, grieving, contrary to what is usually said, does not cover a specific time period. The span of the grieving process will be different for an person compared with another. No one should be forced and “get over” the grief that they are feeling. Time is a great healer.
