Quick Tips: Fashion Designer Career For Your Future
Looking to apply your creative vision to making yourself a little money? Well you can’t go wrong with a fashion designer career. This is one of the hottest fields to get into these days (partly thanks to reality shows like Project Runway), so it’s more cut throat than ever when it comes to the competition involved. Of course, it’s also one of the funnest industries to get involved in and one of the most rewarding, so don’t get scared off by the competition.
Here are just a few things to keep in mind before you get ahead of yourself…
An Education Might Help
Creativity alone won’t really support you in ANY field, much less fashion design. There’s always going to be a technical side. You need to know how clothing works, so to speak. You can’t just throw some doodles together, you also need to understand how to make your ideas a reality. When you’re rich and famous, you can hire people to figure that stuff out for you, but until then, you’ve got to be both a designer and a craftsman/craftswoman.
Be Open to Different Opportunities
If you’re one in a thousand, you might just start the next big fashion company and have your stuff being strutted on runways by the likes of Tyra Banks. If you’re anything like everyone else, you’re going to have to figure out some more practical ways to pay the bills. Don’t be so proud as to turn your nose up at a good opportunity. Let’s say you wind up getting hired to design costumes for an indie film or a rock band, or you land a job designing suits for a department store. Hey, it’s work, and it’s work in your chosen field. Don’t be a snob.
Something Borrowed, Something New
What people want in any creative field is something new mixed with something familiar. So keep one eye on what’s hot right now and one eye on the future. If you get “too imaginative” and start designing clothes that barely even look like clothes, you’re not going to win over many fans. But, if you can create clothing that looks comfortable, stylish, AND novel and new, then you’ve got a niche in the market.
Be Pragmatic
As we mentioned above, you need to know a smart opportunity when you see one. Likewise, you need realistic goals. If your dream is to get rich overnight, then sorry, but you’re in the wrong business. What you should be doing is playing the lottery. On the other hand, if you want to make a living doing what you love, there are millions of ways for you to accomplish this. Just be open, be smart, and be deadly, because the competition won’t cut you any slack, either. Like we said, it’s a dog eat dog world out there, so whatever little niche you’ve carved out for yourself, you’d better be the biggest dog in it, or else move on for greener pastures.
