For a devout Christian, a funeral is a celebration of the soul’s journey towards eternal life from thereon. It is for this very reason that Christian funeral services are very spirited, because they strongly uphold the belief that the deceased has found an eternal abode in the God’s abode.

The rituals in such a funeral service are more like a memorial, in which devotional songs and prayers are sung and texts from the Bible are read out loud. This is then followed by a short message from the pastor and subsequently a mass prayer by all those who have assembled there.

Next the family members and close friends share their grief with the gathering, and the people express their feelings and respect for the deceased and share their ruminations on how the deceased affected their lives and left an everlasting memory. Nowadays, people do a visual display of pictures or play a recorded video of the deceased taken during his or her lifetime.

The final phase in the ceremony is that of a short fellowship reception that is conducted in the church itself and some food is served. People do not go for a graveside service normally, but there are some exceptional cases.
