How Halal Restaurants Abide Islamic Dietary Laws
Many of us have encountered the term “halal,” but not many of us know what it signifies. Halal can be seen on food marks and restaurants. The term is important for our Muslim pals because it indicates what is permitted for them to eat by their Islamic dietary law. In a nation with residents of different religions, the term halal is very important.
For Muslim-populated states, seeing halal on food products and eateries is no problem at all since they are run by Muslims who adhere to Islamic rules. But for states that have citizens practicing different faiths, then halal is not that easy to come by. Fortunately, more and more establishments are becoming conscious of their customers’ preferences.
The word halal simply means legal, which implies that if a restaurant states they are halal-certified or a food item has this term on its label, the preparation of their items is in accordance with the Islamic law. Muslims, therefore, are allowed to use or consume the product.
So what is allowed in Islamic law? There are a number of guidelines, but let’s start with how a meat should be prepared. An animal should be slaughtered by cutting its windpipe and gullet rapidly. This method of ritual slaughter is believed to kill immediately and painlessly.
And because there are halal or permitted items, there are also haraam or forbidden products. To start with, Muslims are forbidden to eat pork and consume alcohol. So a product or an eatery must not add those ingredients to their menu. There should also be no contamination of the items, meaning, if a utensil has been used to prepare a pork meal, it should not be used anymore to prepare a halal-approved item.
Other haraam items include blood, carnivores or birds of prey, animals slaughtered in the name of any other god but Allah or have been consecrated to another idol, and corpse of an animal.
Halal-certified restaurants should conform to the Islamic dietary laws. And because some ingredients are hard to determine whether they are halal or not, there are Muslim groups who certify food products as halal for consumers. Those products with halal certification are used as ingredients by halal restaurants, just to make very sure that they are thoroughly observing the laws.
It’s good to know that there are food establishments not run by Muslims that still make a great effort to abide Islamic dietary laws. It only means that they honor all their clients and honor their preferences and faiths.
