Green Logos

Logos to identify green products and packaging are becoming increasingly common and commercially essential as more US consumers demand that manufactures and retailers provide evidence that their products and services are environmentally friendly.   A green logo in itself is a good thing even for corporations whose basis is not in eco-products.It will aid consumer understanding of the company’s efforts in ethical sourcing, sustainability or recycling packaging. Those concepts must be explained in very clear terms, showing precisely what that symbol means and what it represents.

As manufacturers use a library of more or less similar themes (from the obvious use of the color green itself to nature and animal images) to indicate how “eco-friendly” their products are, the problem arises of how to keep your own green custom logo design looking unique.  That after all is the primary purpose of a logo, especially in today’s highly competitive market.  The function of a logo is to create a memorable impression in the mind of a potential client or customer. It’s the very heart of your company or organization’ s corporate identity and one of the key ways that you establish yourself as stand out in the marketplace.    A green logo has the benefit of providing an immediate indication of  how important you consider your environmental policy to be,  but dozens of similar looking green logos  could lead to consumer confusion and conflict between brands.

When it comes to green advertising and green logo design, the key is to keep it simple but informative without changing the brand logo beyond recognition.   It should be kept as visually consistent with previous versions of your brand or organisation’s symbol while remaining as unique as possible. That approach also needs to be carried through into every piece of marketing communications, from billboards to letterheads and branded envelopes (all made from recycled paper of course!).
