F5 Advice: How To Succeed At Performance Management Accounting And The F5 Paper
The aim of the F5 Paper is simply to test the understanding of how to manage the performance of a business. Sadly, for many candidates the move from Paper F2, which provides the underpinning knowledge to F5, is fraught with difficulties and previous exam results show this.
That said, a plethora of specific F5 advice, aimed solely at helping with Performance Management accounting, can now be accessed at a new ACCA, Paper F5 micro-site. Whilst, total immersion is the best way to get to know the site, plotting visits in advance, perhaps in the following order, may prove useful.
A great place to begin is the homepage. A concise description and essential ingredients for each of the five areas of the syllabus can be found here. This will give a framework for the paper. Thereafter, go to the resources section and the syllabus and study guide. These afford a view of the objectives and composition of the syllabus, exam structure and marking, as well as advice on directing study.
Students often assume that the F5 paper can be approached in the same way as the F2 paper. They do not understand that as a “skills” paper, candidates must clearly demonstrate a capacity to apply the fundamental subject knowledge to business situations. As a consequence, a review of the article “Stepping up – the difference between paper F2 and F5”, again in the resources section, will make clear how not to fall into this trap.
Having understood the key elements of F5 paper students ought then to establish the objectives of the examiner. When clarified, they can help shape study and inform a smart approach to the exam process. The “F5 approach article” in the “Examiner’s Guidance” is particularly good at making clear the expectations, as are the Examiner reports and interviews.
The site also offers practical support in the form of self test pages, maths tables and past papers etc, to enable students to help gather together learning, test understanding and provide practice in answering exam questions. There are also two excellent articles entitled “Top Tips for the Paper F5 exam” and “Answering Written Questions” which provide invaluable F5 advice on how to avoid the pitfalls, focus learning and use exam technique to interpret questions correctly, win easy marks and maximise performance.
The F5 exam is without question a jump up from previous knowledge orientated papers, as a review of past results with demonstrate. Yet smart use of the F5 micro-site should afford students every opportunity to succeed and buck the trend of earlier candidates.
