Most businesses designate an employee to observe the actual shredding, insuring that all documentation is shredded and witnessed. Some shredding vendors insist upon this. Others don’t. In general there are two types of paper shredders: The cross cut shredder cuts paper both length-wise and width-wise and insures a maximum of security for confidential documents. This kind of shredder has a bigger maintenance rate.

The second type of shredder for confidential shredding is “Strip-Cut”. With a strip-cut shredder, paper is cut shredded length-wise into strips, hence the name. With this type shredder, though, disposal is more frequent and not very compact. Unlike the cross-cut shredder, the strip-cut requires little or no maintenance.

Other features to be considered are the number of pages that can be shredded with one pass through. If you are shredded junk mail and you have a volume on a weekly basis to be shredded, a 3 page shredder will take a longer time for the shredding process. Check the accompanying shredder manual as to whether the shredder also shreds items like credit cards, DVD disks, CDs and stapled documents. Removing staples from volumes of documents wastes time. The size of the shredder may also be important is space if is a consideration. Don’t just throw away shredded paper. It can be safely used in backyard mulch. If you’re a handy crafter, it can be used in craft projects from pillow stuffing to making dolls. Many municipalities also recycle shredded paper. There are also several companies who purchase it at a reasonable rate.
