Before You Begin Your Job Search, Create A Powerful Value Proposition

A value proposition is a statement that describes the real results that a company would get from hiring you, and the unique benefits that you would bring to an employer.

Effective value propositions include a data point that embodies the value that you deliver, for example a revenue increase that you contributed to or a cost savings that you made possible. Strong value propositions are also short and punchy. They do not seek to tell your entire story: they offer just enough impressive information for a prospective employer to say “tell me more!”

Sadly, many job hunters never make an effort to craft a value proposition that is clear, concise, and convincing. By not having this vital component in their job search toolchest, they reduce their odds of having their resume read, being considered for an interview, or getting employed.

The fellow who’s featured in this short animated video that I put together does not have a clue about the best way to express his talents as an attractive value proposition. The result is an irritated interviewer and an unemployable job seeker. (FYI, the job seeker’s dialogue was taken from the particular resumes and LinkedIn pages of execs who are searching for work.)

A value proposition is the backbone of your rehirement strategy. When it’s smart, tight, and appealing, it will give you a strong map to follow that will give your job search a much better chance of succeeding. You will be less dependent on getting random tactics correct (i.e, the correct way to sit, how to stand, the best way to dress, the way to shake hands, etc.) and you’ll have much more control over the result of your efforts.

If you want to be taken seriously by a possible employer and gain a massive edge over other job hunters who are vying for an opening, be certain to build a value proposition that's brief, data-driven, and memorable.
