One of our clients was concerned that their corporate name and article content was being associated to a discount websites because their article was posted on a travel site offering discount airline travel, while the customer is presenting a 4-star travel experience.

Article spinning is a craft to re-create non-duplicate content from an original article in order to submit it to articles directories.  This method is a great way to advertise a brand and establish links to a website.  But it is also a balancing act, and involves a bit of a Catch-22.  Defending brand identity is always imperative – so the client should question the issues and then should to determine whether to continue article spinning.  However it may be worthwhile to review just what are these articles before getting into that.

Spun articles can be used on your own blogs, manually submitted to or automatically submitted through subscription services to either blogs or article directories based on subject category.In general there isn’t anything unusual to article categories.

They accept the article because they want content in order to display Google ads.  More often than not it is an exchange of decent content  for decent backlinks to the web page.

The fact that these are showing up in Google Alerts is great for a site.  It means the content is getting indexed by Google and the hyperlinks to the domain are being found.  Google, and other, spiderbots will follow the link to your website too – checking anchor text link relevancy.  Also the fact that it happens quickly means Google values the article sites.

Typically They are not really intended to be presented to the target audience.  Having the articles read by people that follow the link, isn’t really expected or intended and is more of a bonus.  However direct traffic comes from article directories, but it is not why we’re doing the article submissions.  Only a few of the people that see these articles also see your site your website but your site better have relevant content.

Regarding the Catch-22:  So in the short run there is a concern that people searching topics of interest might actually come across these articles rather than land on your web page; but then if you do the math it shrinks into a very small chance that there will be a bad perception by a target audience.  Most of the undesirable content is in adword ads, that most visitors are likely to ignore regardless.  The few of questionable domain names just don’t matter very much in the big picture.

When we create articles they are set not to appear on adult, gambling, on-line pharmacy, or weight loss pages … but other than designating categories to submit we’re at the mercy of domains and rely upon them to follow to submission directory rules.  The rewards far outweigh the possibility of any negative perceptions.  Concerns regarding protecting brand are important and deserve discussing about.   But these links are the backbone to having people find the original content through organic search.
