A Quick Guide To Setting Up An Online Store

There are two ways to go about doing anything: the right way and the wrong way. You can tell if a hardware store is set up the right way if you feel at home in there the minute you walk into the door. Everything is arranged neatly and organized in such a way that you can easily find what you’re looking for.

Think of your homepage as the entrance to your hardware store. When somebody comes in and they want to buy a chainsaw, they don’t want to have to look everywhere. They want to go straight to the chainsaw section of the store.

When they find the chainsaw department, they will be pretty disappointed if there is only one chainsaw on display. They may be after a husqvarna chainsaw, but if there are not several models to choose from, odds are the model they want won’t be there if you’ve only got one to offer them.

Besides that, you will want them to notice the other brands you’ve got and especially the ones you’ve got on sale. If you’ve got an echo chainsaw on sale, make sure they know it’s there.

Not everybody who comes into your store for a chainsaw is going to want a husqvarna or an echo. Some people will be looking for a mcculloch chainsaw or some other brand. You need to have them all and the customer needs to be able to compare their features. That way, you are almost sure to make a sale.

So, the first thing you do is set up your homepage so that your visitors can find what they’ve come there for. However, a well set up hardware store is also designed to entice people to buy things they didn’t come in for. If they come in for a box of screws, you want them to buy a set of screwdrivers, too. If you display the screwdrivers next to the screws, they are likely to grab a set of those before they leave the store.

Think about that concept when you’re setting up the store. Find related items to sell and display them prominently. If you are selling books on your website, sell ebook readers right alongside the books. They have a much higher profit margin, so they could end up being your real money maker.

You can see from the hardware store example above that there are a lot of things to consider when you’re making an online store. The more thoroughly and professionally you lay out your store, the higher your chances of success. Don’t forget the checkout counter, either. Make sure it’s set up so that the customer can make his purchase without delays or hassles.
